First off let's get this clear, I'm not a medical professional. I don't have degrees in this field and despite what your personal trainer tells you he more than likely isn't qualified to give you advice either.
But..... I've been interested in nutrition since I was 15 years old and experimented with a lot of fad diets and health hacks along the way. I've always wanted to get the most out of my body and looked to nutrition and supplementation (not steroids) to get that winning edge.
The answer to dieting is... there is no right or wrong answer!
Any diet can work for you if you stick to it. Whether it's keto, intermittent fasting, lemon detox diet or calorie counting - you can make them all work if you: 1- believe in it and 2- stick to the diets protocols.
What I follow and where I point my clients-
Counting calories- At the end of the day no matter what diet you are following, you can't lose weight if your calories are over what is required to run your body. You need to run the engine on less than what the body requires so the reserve tank (your fat) kicks in for fuel or in your case - energy.
Intermittent fasting
For clients who struggle with will power, fasting is a great way to avoid snacking on the go. By simply reducing your eating window (8 hour eating window) it controls those snacks and meals when you were eating for boredom or taste. If you happen to slip up and have a cheeky bowl of ice cream the chances are you will still probably be under your calorie limit for the day if not break even. It doesn't give you a free pass to eat 15 big Macs a day but it can give you some leeway and flexibility for the odd slip up.
Keto If you struggle with sugar cravings or find you tend to binge on carbohydrates then Keto could be for you. Reducing your carbs to less than 20grams a day can kick your body into ketosis which in turn makes your body run on fatty acids not sugars like normal. Once again it can be a great way to avoid high calorie foods and drink, which then reduces your calories intake, which equals fat loss.
There is no room for cheating with keto.
It can also have adverse affects if you have a binge on sugary foods.
For me, life is all about balance. If I know I'm going to have a cheat meal that night, I'll make sure I get extra exercise in or I reduce my calories during the day.
Whether you count calories, fast 16 hrs everyday or cut out your carbs you need to remember that everything in moderation is key & if it taste to good to be true then it probably is.
